Carmi Elan was born on April 24, 1989, in Los Angeles to Tod and Eileen Elan. His great-grandfather immigrated to pre-state Palestine from Britain during the Mandate period, and his grandfather was a member of the Haganah underground. Carmi’s father met his American wife in Israel, and they later moved to California, returning to Israel with their family in 1992. Carmi attended Tichon Hadash High School in Herzliya and had a passion for extreme sports, especially snowboarding and kitesurfing. On October 22, 2008, Carmi was killed along with another cadet when their Zukit trainer aircraft crashed in the Negev. He was laid to rest at the Kibbutz Einat cemetery.
