Carmi Elan was born on April 24, 1989 in Los Angeles to Tod and Eileen. Carmi's great-grandfather came to Palestine from Britain during the period of the Mandate and his grandfather was a member of the pre-State Haganah underground.
Carmi's father met his American wife in Israel and they moved to California. In 1992 the family returned to Israel. Carmi attended the Tichon Hadash High School in Herzlia and loved everything related to 'extreme sports' including snowboarding and, most passionately, kitesurfing.
On October 22,2008 Carmi was one of two Air Force cadets who died when their Zukit trainer crashed in the Negev. He was buried in the Kibbutz Einat cemetery.
