Dr Shelley Wolochow Halpenny, from Vancouver, Canada, was in Israel with her sister, accompanying her father (on the Canadian pistol team) to the Maccabiah Games and to plan a dental volunteer program for disadvantaged areas. Described as fiercely independent since early childhood, she steadfastly refused family help with her higher education and setting up her own dental office. A talented musician, athlete, and cook, she was also active in Hadassah, the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and the Vancouver Women's Rowing Club, Dental Study Clubs, and skiing. She still had time for her siblings, parents, grandparents, and many friends. Shelley was killed in the terrorist attack on the #405 Tel Aviv-Jerusalem bus on July 6, 1989, when a terrorist forced the bus off the road.
