Life Story

Leonard Fitchett was born in Canada and served in the RCAF, where he is credited with having shot down the last German plane before the end of WWII. He was always drawn to the downtrodden and was attracted to Israel and its battle for independence. After coming to this country, he had such an affinity for the people and the land that he decided to immigrate and live on a kibbutz. He enlisted in the new developing Israel Air Force and succeeded in downing three Egyptian Spitfires, despite the fact that he was flying a less effective aircraft. On one attack, he also routed an Egyptian warship. Leonard fell in battle over the Negev during the War of Independence, on October 20, 1948. His body was never found. *** The information on this page is part of the 'Yizkor' commemoration project by the Ministry of Defense / the 'La'ad' website by the National Insurance Institute, in memory of the fallen.
