Life Story

Joseph “Joe” Berniker was born on December 19, 1954, in the United States, likely in New Orleans. He completed his schooling and one year of college-level philosophy studies before making aliyah to Israel in 1974. Joe made his home on Kibbutz Gesher HaZiv and was drafted into the IDF in early 1975. He served in the Armored Corps as a combat soldier and NCO, known for his discipline, professionalism, personal integrity, and initiative. Joe married Sharon and together they built a life on the kibbutz, raising three children: Meron, Adam, and Golan. During reserve duty, Joe was killed in a training accident in Tze’elim. He was laid to rest at Kibbutz Gesher HaZiv and is remembered with love by his wife, children, parents, three brothers, Gerard, Michael, and Anthony, and sister Rosemary. *** The information on this page is part of the 'Yizkor' commemoration project by the Ministry of Defense / the 'La'ad' website by the National Insurance Institute, in memory of the fallen.
