Hagai, fifth of six children born to Shimon and Noa Lev, grew up in in Efrat in Gush Etzion, where the family settled in 1984. His mother, Noa, was originally from the USA. After graduating from high school, Hagai studied at the pre-military yeshiva at Atzmona in Gush Katif.
Hagai was hit by sniper fire during a large-scale operation on the outskirts of Rafah to uncover tunnels used for smuggling arms into the Gaza Strip from Egypt. As Hagai was patrolling the area with his troops, a sniper fired at them from one of the houses. He was hit in the jaw and was taken to hospital by helicopter in a critical condition. He died shortly after arrival.
Just a year before his death Hagai married Nurit, and the couple settled in Jerusalem.
He was buried in the Mount Hertz military cemetery. in Jerusalem.
He is survived by his parents, wife and five siblings.
