Staff Sergeant Shaul Lahav, son of Yehudit and David, was born on July 16, 1983, and raised on Kibbutz Shomrat. His parents had made aliyah from New York in 1972.
Shaul graduated with distinction from Ofek Regional High School, where he majored in science and physics. He was also an outstanding athlete, especially in volleyball. In November 2001, he was drafted into the IDF and served in the Nahal Unit.
On November 18, 2003, Shaul was commanding a checkpoint on the tunnel bypass road connecting Jerusalem and Gush Etzion. Just minutes before his shift ended, a terrorist approached the checkpoint and opened fire. Shaul advanced toward him, preventing the attacker from harming other soldiers.
He is buried in the military cemetery on Kibbutz Shomrat and is survived by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
