Eli HaZeev was born in New York on October 19, 1947, to Mary and James Mahon. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, later converted to Judaism, and changed his name to HaZeev. In 1973, he made aliyah to Israel and joined a combat unit in the IDF.
Eli settled in Kiryat Arba with his wife Shoshana, where they raised their daughter. He worked as a locksmith, was active in Torah study, and a member of the Kach movement.
On May 2, 1980, Eli was killed in a terrorist attack near the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, as worshippers were walking toward Beit Hadassah. Five people were killed and 16 injured in the attack.
