Life Story

Shlomi Matias, age forty-nine, was an Israeli musician, husband, and father of three. He was murdered in his home in Kibbutz Holit on October seventh, two thousand twenty-three, alongside his wife Deborah as they protected their son Rotem from Hamas terrorists. Shlomi taught music at a mixed Arab and Jewish high school and was deeply committed to fostering coexistence through education and the arts. Known for his gentle spirit and devotion to his family, Shlomi faced the brutal terror attack with unimaginable courage. On that day, he and Deborah shielded their son Rotem with their bodies, saving his life at the cost of their own. Rotem later recounted his parents’ sacrifice in media interviews, emphasizing their love and bravery. After their murder, Rotem survived hours in hiding until he was rescued. Shlomi’s legacy, like Deborah’s, is a testament to love, music, and humanity standing in the face of hatred. He is survived by his children Rotem, Shaked, and Shir, his extended family, and countless students and friends who mourn his loss. ** The information on this page is part of the 'Yizkor' commemoration project by the Ministry of Defense / the 'La'ad' website by the National Insurance Institute, in memory of the fallen.
