Sean Nissim Carmeli was born on May 12, 1993, in South Padre Island, Texas, to Dalya and Alon Carmeli. He grew up loving sports like basketball, American football, and soccer, and spent much of his time on the beach. At sixteen, his family moved back to Israel and Sean attended Ostrovski High School in Ra’anana, where he was part of a community of olim and returning residents. When his parents returned to Texas, Sean and his sisters stayed in Israel. After studying in yeshiva, he proudly enlisted in the Golani Brigade. Despite a foot injury, Sean insisted on joining his unit when fighting broke out in Gaza in July 2014. On July 20, he was killed when his armored personnel carrier was struck in Shejaiya, along with six other soldiers. He was twenty-one years old. An estimated 20,000 people attended his funeral, many wanting to honor him out of concern that his parents’ absence from Israel would leave him without mourners. Sean is survived by his parents and his sisters, Gal and Or.
