Maoz Morell, זצ"ל, son of Eitan and Varda (Linzer) Morell, nephew to Rabbi Dov Linzer and Rabbanit Devorah Zlochower, and a soldier in the IDF’s elite paratroopers unit, died on Feb. 19. 2024, succumbing to the wounds he received fighting against Hamas terrorists and protecting his fellow soldiers in Gaza a few days earlier. On the morning of October 7, Morell was on holiday. He heard of Hamas’s brutal attack on Israel’s south, and went home to collect his equipment and rushed to the fighting underway in the Re’im area. That day was the last time his family saw him until he was hospitalized, remaining mostly unconscious until his death.
Described by his family as both devout and highly athletic, Morell decided to combine religious study with his army service and enrolled at the hesder yeshiva in Kfar Tapuah, enlisting as a paratrooper. It was through his extraordinary determination and his pushing of himself every day that he saw success in his Torah learning and that he became a leader and an inspiration to his fellow paratroopers saving the wounded until his final moments.
