Life Story

Avraham, son of Leah Yente and Eliezer, was born in Jerusalem on May 5, 1957. His father, a Holocaust survivor, immigrated from the Czech Republic. At the age of five, Avraham, along with his family, spent four years in the United States, where his father worked for the Jewish Agency. On July 23, 1975, he joined the Hesder Yeshiva in Kiryat Arba. In this capacity, he enlisted in the IDF and served in the Armored Corps. He passed a series of courses, including a tank driver course, and was promoted to the rank of corporal. After four years of service, he was discharged from the army. Following his mandatory service, he began studying at the Kollel Avrechim in Mevasseret Zion. Upon completing his studies, he was offered an educational mission abroad. However, he declined the offer, believing his true mission lay in educating the younger generation in Israel's development towns. With the outbreak of the Lebanon War on June 6, 1982, he was called up for reserve duty and joined his unit at the front in Lebanon as a tank commander. On June 10, 1982, while his unit advanced in the area of Lake Karoun, his tank was hit. For several days, he was considered missing until his body was found. On June 21, 1982, he was laid to rest in the Givat Shaul Cemetery, near his mother’s grave. He was survived by his wife, his father, his adoptive mother, two brothers, and three sisters. *** The information on this page is part of the 'Yizkor' commemoration project by the Ministry of Defense / the 'La'ad' website by the National Insurance Institute, in memory of the fallen.
