Life Story

Marcus Hochstein was born on May 22, 1964, in Washington, D.C., to Joe and Chana Hochstein. He first visited Israel in 1979 on a summer program at Kibbutz Beit Hashita and quickly developed a deep connection to the country. After his mother’s passing in 1981, Marcus returned to Israel to study at Tel Aviv University and was warmly adopted by the Efroni family on Kibbutz Beit Hashita. Eager to experience all aspects of Israeli life, he also volunteered in the development town of Ma’alot, working in a kindergarten. After travels through Europe and India, Marcus helped his family make aliyah and officially immigrated to Israel at the end of 1983. In 1984 he enlisted in the IDF and served in the Paratroopers Brigade. On March 30, 1985, while on patrol in the Nabatiya sector of Lebanon, Marcus was critically wounded during a clash with terrorists and died of his injuries two days later. He was laid to rest at Kibbutz Beit Hashita. Marcus is remembered for his idealism, devotion, and unwavering love for Israel. *** The information on this page is part of the 'Yizkor' commemoration project by the Ministry of Defense / the 'La'ad' website by the National Insurance Institute, in memory of the fallen.
