Mark Schwartz was born on September 15, 1950, in New York City to William and Elizabeth Schwartz. He was an active member and leader in Young Judea. After completing high school, he came to Israel in 1968 for the Young Judea Year Course, where he developed a strong connection to the country. He studied Hebrew, Jewish history, and Zionism, and decided to make aliyah. Although his parents initially urged him to remain in the United States, they eventually joined him in making aliyah in 1970.
Mark began university studies in law at the Hebrew University but later transferred to the mechina program for medicine, where he excelled.
He was drafted into the IDF in November 1970, volunteered for the infantry, and later trained as a paramedic. He was assigned to the Air Force with the rank of sergeant. On October 7, 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, Mark’s helicopter was shot down over Sinai. He was buried in the Kiryat Shaul Military Cemetery. He was survived by his parents, his sister, and his Israeli-born wife, Miriam.
