Yisrael Reinman immigrated to Israel from New York and enlisted in the Nahal Haredi Battalion, an infantry unit that integrates combat service with ultra-Orthodox observance. He was estranged from his family in Brooklyn.
On June 6, 2006, he left a platoon exercise, walked to a nearby Jordan Valley village mosque, and shot himself. Fearing terrorists had kidnapped him, Nahal Haredi commanders initiated a search. He was buried in Jerusalem in a civilian ceremony.
