Yehuda Shmuel was born in 2008 to Yehoshua and Sima Sherman, who made aliyah in 2001. His maternal grandparents, Howie (Zvi) and Phyllis (Cooki) Maisel, have roots in Cleveland, OH, and made aliyah to Efrat.
According to Arutz 7, Yehuda Shmuel was on a mounted security patrol with his older brother Daniel and another friend when an Arab pickup truck rammed them, throwing the vehicle into an abyss about ten meters from the car. Daniel was injured but made his way to Yehuda Shmuel and shield Yehuda Shmuel with his body as Arabs threw stones at them for 40 minutes. Yehuda Shmuel was dead by the time rescue forces arried, and Daniel suffered fractured vertebrae in his back and neck.
Yehuda Shmuel’s motto and sticker: “The land of Israel needs me."
