Virgen Flores was one of the 17 Puerto Rican pilgrims killed by three members of the Japanese Red Army, recruited by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine at Lod Airport on May 30, 1972.
She was 20 years old and was traveling with her 15 year old niece, Maria, who later wrote "It was supposed to be a wonderful trip to Europe for my favorite aunt and me but it ended in tragedy and in a never ending nightmare.” Years later Maria sought therapy to begin to heal a wound that was “too deep and too big to let her live in peace."
