Uriel Peretz Liwerant was born on January 16, 1988 in Jerusalem to Aaron and Joni, who came on aliya from New York City in May 1983. His family lived in Efrat, and Uriel studied at the Neveh Shmuel Yeshiva High School there and then at Yeshivat Har Zion in Alon Shvut. He was a brilliant student and excelled in sports.
Uriel began his active army service in 2008 and completed the tank commanders course in July 2009. On August 5, 2009, in the early morning hours, Uriel’s tank had to cross over a deep ditch on a mobile bridge. Uriel felt the tank was not crossing straight. He commanded his crew to brace themselves. This was his last command, enabling his soldiers to take precaution. He, however, was thrown from the tank and killed instantly. He was able to save his soldiers but not himself. He was buried on Har Herzl in Jerusalem and is survived by his parents, three sisters and two grandparents.
