Life Story

Bernie and Joan Levine of Kansas City's son, Rabbi Kalman Ze’ev Levine, 55, was murdered in a terrorist attack on Tuesday morning, November 18, 2014, along with three other worshippers while attending morning prayers at the Kehillat Bnei Torah synagogue in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Nof. Levine, who also went by his English name Cary William, was born and raised in Kansas City, along with his sisters Shelley and Stephanie. As a child, he attended and graduated from Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in Overland Park, Kan., a suburb outside of Kansas City. As an adult, he visited Israel on a study program and ended up moving there in the early 1980s. In Israel, Levine married, fathered nine children and became (at the time of his death) a grandfather of five. After his marriage, Rabbi Levin learned at Kollel Lev Avrohom in Meah Shearim, as well as at Kehillas Bnei Torah, where the attack took place. **The information on this page is part of the “Yizkor” commemoration project by the Ministry of Defense/the ‘La’ad’ website by the National Insurance Institute, in memory of the fallen.
