Rabbi Eli Horovitz was a man of peace, a man of great erudition in Jewish learning, but also a person with a ready smile and a beauty of spirit who loved nature and music. He was born in Kfar Haroeh but spent most of his childhood in Miami Beach, Florida, and Silver Spring, Maryland, before returning to Israel at age 16. After marrying Debbie (Dina) Wolf at Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva on the 10th of Av 5773 (1973), he and Dina lived in the Mekor Baruch neighborhood near the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem. The family moved to Kiryat Arba in 1984. Rabbi Eli taught Torah in many places, including Yeshiva Shavei Hebron , which was his primary place of work.
Rabbi Eli and Dina were murdered in their home, in the midst of a Shabbat meal, on 4 Adar 2, 5763 (7.3.2003). The three eldest children, Batsheva, Zvi, and Nechama, were already married and the youngest, Shulamit, who still lived at home, was spending Shabbat in Eilat. This created a very rare situation in which Eli and Dina dined alone on Shabbat night. In the middle of the meal, two terrorists came into Kiryat Arba disguised as yeshiva students. They entered the Horwitz family's home. Eli and Dina ran to the center of the house, Batsheva's room. There they were found embracing, shot to death.
