Dagan Moshe Wertman was born in 1977 in Jerusalem to Eliyahu and Devorah. His mother, Debbie, an American citizen, was born shortly after the aliyah of her parents, Prof. Hillel and Syril Blondheim, in 1951. Dagan studied at the yeshiva high school of Mercaz Harav, Yeshivat Hesder Or Etzion, and spent six years at the Har Hamor Yeshiva. He was drafted into the Golani Brigade and steadily rose to the rank of Major. At the end of 2008, he took leave for two years of additional study at the yeshiva, but with the outbreak of Operation Cast Lead, Dagan returned to his unit. On January 5, 2009, he and two fellow officers were killed in Gaza during clashes with Hamas due to two misdirected IDF tank shells. Dagan is survived by his parents, four siblings, and his grandfather.
