I well remember this very polite young man. The young people of Harrisburg knew him because he was in a band and popular with the youth because of his music. This was long before Gaza and was the sort of thing Jewish parents feared when their children went to study in Israel. His father was a doctor in Harrisburg.
Benjamin Blutstein had completed two years of study at Machon Pardes and was set to begin a joint program in the Pardes Educators Program and Hebrew University that fall. In 2000, he earned a B.A. in Religion and Judaic Studies from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, where he served as president of Hillel from 1998 to 1999. Known for his unique blend of styles, Benjamin wore a kippah, tzitzit, and earrings, embodying the diverse facets of his identity. He brought joy to many through his laughter and as a popular disco DJ known as "Benny the B."
Benjamin was killed during the July 31, 2002 bombing at the Hebrew University cafeteria while attending summer ulpan. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Katherine, and a sister. Benjamin was laid to rest at Kesher Israel Cemetery in Harrisburg.
