Life Story

Amitai Yonatan Westreich was born on December 29, 1971, in New York to David and Penina. When Amitai was nine months old, the family made aliya and settled in Beersheba. Eight years later, they moved to Petach Tikva. Amitai first attended the Yavne State-Religious elementary school in Kfar Ganim and then spent six years studying in the Kfar Ganim Yeshiva High School. Later, he attended the Karnei Shomron Hesder Yeshiva. He was drafted into the IDF in July 1990 and served the the Military Rabbinate. On March 7, 1992, Amitai was killed in a traffic accident on the Jerusalem-Ben Shemen road, near Beit Horon. He was buried in the Jerusalem (Har Hamenuchot) cemetery. In his memory, the family donated a Parochet for the Ark in the Kfar Ganim Yeshiva. A public park in the Ramat Modi'im bears his name and that of his friend, who was killed with him. Yeshivat Karnei Shomron established, in his name, a cassette library on religious subjects. *** The information on this page is part of the 'Yizkor' commemoration project by the Ministry of Defense / the 'La'ad' website by the National Insurance Institute, in memory of the fallen.
