Amitai Yonatan Westreich was born on December 29, 1971 in New York to David and Penina. When Amitai was nine months old the family made aliya and settled in Beersheba. Eight years later they moved to Petach Tikva. Amitai first attended the Yavne State-Religious elementary school in Kfar Ganim and then spent six years studying in in the Kfar Ganim Yeshiva High School. Later he attended the Karnei Shomron Hesder Yeshiva.
Amitai was drafted into the IDF in July 1990 and served the the Military Rabbinate. On March 7, 1992 Amitai was killed in a traffic accident on the Jerusalem-Ben Shemen road, near Beit Horon. He was buried in the Jerusalem cemetery.
