Alex Sasaki was born in California July 8, 1991 to Steve and Shelley, and made aliya to Israel in 2016 at the age of 25. Alex had studied at the University of Oregon before his aliyah. His goal was to serve in the IDF as a Lone Soldier and, despite his age, he even managed to convince the IDF to assign him as a combat soldier in the Golani Brigade. He connected with his fellow-soldiers, making a great effort to learn Hebrew, which was critical to his army service. He had also volunteered with the Ethiopian National Project, working with Ethiopian children.
Known for displaying great calmness under pressure, Alex was a “people person” with many talents such as cooking, art, and humor, and he shared them with the people around him. He planned to open a restaurant in Tel Aviv after his army service where he could cook and display his art. He died on March 25, 2019. Alex is survived by his parents, and his brother, Kevin. He is buried at Har Herzl.
